Hi loves! These are my tips for moving to a new city. Have you ever felt like you just want to pack up all your things and just get away? Possibly permanently. Start a new journey in a new city. A new you. A reinvented you. Where you don’t know anyone. A fresh start for yourself. I think we all go through this phase at some point in our lives. I feel like I’m there.

I’m facing this debate. So how do we decide? I’m about to share my tips for moving to a new city that you need to think about! Is it the right option for us and not an impulsive decision? Maybe we don’t know or maybe we need a list of pros and cons, maybe we just take that giant leap of faith and know it’ll all work out in the end? I’m here to provide you with my tips for moving to a new city before you actually do it.

Why?

Why do you want to move to a new city? This question has to be brutally answered before you can start this journey. Is it because of a job? A dream place for you to live in. My answer is because when I look around my town, I see no one that does what I want to do.

Everyone in my area is content working their 9-5 job, doing through their days, and still partying in the same tragic nightlife scene. Nothing is new. It’s the same old scene. Same places and the same faces. Once you know exactly why you want to move and it’s important to you, then you can start the next phase.

Location

A location is the most important thing when you’re moving. What part of the city are you going to live in, how safe is it, how close is it to work, entertainment venues, things to do. I recommend taking a trip to your new city first, spend a week out there seeing the area, exploring the neighborhood to get a better idea if you’ll fit in.

My tip for moving to a new city is to plan a couple of trips out there first. One to see if you can truly see yourself living here. Once you found a good neighborhood for you, then start looking at places to live. Now that you have settled on a location you just gotta finish up some loose ends, pack up the U-Haul and go.

Job Life

If you wanted to just get a fresh start somewhere new, then just make sure you can transfer to your new location. A lot of companies will allow you to move with the same position mostly the same pay depending on the city as long as you give them enough time in advance to make the transfer. But maybe you wanted to move to a new city because of a new job and this was actually the first thing you needed to get done before you can actually find your location.

That’s totally fine because both location and job can be interchangeable. What if you can’t transfer and you need to find a new job. Well that’s where LinkedIn and Indeed Jobs come in handy, plus you can tell them you plan to move so the interviews can be done via Skype or even planned in advance for you to make the trip. You have the neighborhood you want to live in, a new job, so let’s move to a new city.

Ready, Set, Let’s Go

Now that you’ve found a new place to live and have a secure job all that is left is to get there. Say your goodbyes to family and friends and get excited. You’re about to start a new chapter, a new you is about to start living. I think my favorite idea of moving to a new city is meeting new people, different people. I chose a city like Dallas or San Francisco because it’s predominately young 20’s-40’s, a lot of opportunities in the financial (my degree background) industry and big cities with a bunch of things to do.

It allows me to start new, be secure in the job market, housing is priced properly for the area, but also allows me to meet new people. Networking is huge for my line of business and good personally as well. I may not be ready to take the plunge just yet but trust me these tips for moving to a new city have been in my head for years. If you’re ready for something new, do it, be smart, and just go.
